This page provides information for professors at the International University of Monaco who need to choose and order course material.
Choosing your course material
Books
Most publishers will send you inspection, evaluation, or review copies of potential textbooks. These can be ordered through the library, or directly from the publisher's website yourself. Be aware, however, that if you decide not to adopt the text, you may be asked to either return the book in its original condition, or to buy it. Here are some links to leading academic publishers' websites, with information on their policies and procedures for inspection copies.
It pays to review your course material well in advance of the start of the class, as publishers can take several weeks to confirm that you are a professor from a legitimate academic institution. Ideally, you should build up a relationship with the sales reps so that they will send you new material as it is published. Contact the Head of Library & Research Services for the name and email address of the publishers' representatives for Monaco.
Please note that if you choose a book that is not considered to be a "textbook", we will not be able to obtain free copies for you. In these cases, the book for review will be bought by the library, and will remain the property of the library. It may be possible to get a free copy once the book store has ordered copies for the students.
Case studies and readings
We use two main suppliers for case studies: the European Case Clearing House (ECCH) and Harvard Business School (HBS). If you register on the websites for both these suppliers, you will be able to search for cases and download sample copies for review. Registration is not immediate, because your status as a professor will need to be verified, but this can be done quite quickly by linking to your profile on the university website, or by faxing a copy of your university business card.
The university also has access to subscription databases of journal and newspaper articles that you can search for current or interesting material for class readings. Please check the e-services webpage on this site, for more information on this.
Obtaining copies of required material
Once you've made a decision about the textbook, cases or readings that will be required for your class, you should contact the Head of Library & Research Services immediately, since all stock orders for the book store are placed through the library. Ideally, you should make your requirements known six to eight weeks before class starts, to avoid problems such as lost or delayed deliveries, re-print requirements, payment issues, etc. Don't forget that all our books must be sourced from outside Monaco.
When the orders for students have been confirmed, it's possible to obtain one free copy of your chosen textbook for your own use. This instructor's, professor's, lecturer's or teacher's copy can also be ordered through the library, or directly from the sales rep, who will contact the university book store to verify that student copies have been ordered. If your instructor's copy hasn't arrived in time for the start of class, please contact the Head of Library & Research Services, who will arrange for a copy to be given to you. The book store will not be able to supply a copy from its stock without authorization.
Special requirements
The publisher Pearson closes during December to carry out a stock check, and so textbooks for classes that start in January must be ordered before the first week of December to avoid delays.
Instructors' supplements
Most textbook authors also produce supplementary material to help teachers to use the books. The majority of these items are now available either on CD or through a website, and include such things as PowerPoint slides, quiz answers, and test questions. Please be aware that when new editions of textbooks are published, the supplements are not always immediately available, and that when the CD is produced, it is usually ordered directly from the USA, and so may be subject to delays. Hence, it's always advisable to keep yourself updated by regularly visiting your textbook website, or by maintaining a relationship with your textbook publisher representative.
Over the past couple of years, publisher's have become more wary of sending out instructor's supplements without ensuring that the textbooks will be ordered for resale to students. The Library can't obtain instructor's supplements unless you guarantee that your students will be obliged to buy the book. This is especially true of textbooks published by Thomson, and recently, McGraw Hill.
Textbook websites
The website for your textbook is usually listed in the preface to the book (along with all other supplementary material), and is often printed on the back cover of the book too. Some publishers expect you to register on the website as an instructor (Pearson do this), in which case, you need to register early, as your status as a professor in Monaco will be verified before allowing you access. This is to guard against students registering and obtaining the answers to all the quizzes and test questions. Other publishers (such as McGraw Hill) will normally send access information through the sales rep, who will either send it directly to you, or to the primary contact at the university, in our case the Head of Library & Research Services.
